Unexpected Connections (2012) for Concert Band (with optional Bassoon feature) [4:00]
~ Commissioned by Brad Lampe and the Clarke Community High School Concert Band
~ 8.5 X 11 score and set of 29 parts plus Baritone in Treble Clef (originally in Bass Clef) and Bassoon Solo Options A and B
Program Notes: Unexpected Connections was written for the Clarke Community High School Concert Band, an ensemble I was privileged to be a part of years ago. The band is fortunate to be under the direction of Brad Lampe, and the bassoon solo in this piece was written specifically for his son, Mitch. The title symbolizes my ties to my small-town high school alma mater, even after years of college and many travels and adventures elsewhere. The piece features surprising harmonic and stylistic shifts and may therefore be perceived as random at times, but two melodies recur in various guises throughout the piece and give it a sense of unity.
A Note to the Conductor: Although this piece was originally written as a bassoon feature, it is acknowledged that exceptional bassoonists may not be readily available. Therefore, the set of parts contains two different options for Bassoon 1; Option A is the original part, while Option B (labeled in the score as “Ossia” wherever it diverges from the original part) provides a more accessible alternative. Additionally, all of the bassoon melodies are cued elsewhere in the band. If you choose to use the cues rather than featuring a bassoonist, all bassoons should read from the Bassoon 2 part.
