Sax-chaconne

Sax-chaconne (2010) for Saxophone Quartet [8:00]

Sax-chaconne: Sample

Program Notes: Although Sax-chaconne is not a true chaconne in the strictest sense, it is based on the principle of the repetition and variation of a single musical idea, in this case a 16-measure melody first stated in the tenor saxophone. The melody is then stated three more times in the first section of the work: as a canon, in a chorale style, and with a flowing eighth-note accompaniment. The middle section is faster and makes use of funk and latin dance rhythms, and the final section is an exact reversal of the entire first slower section with splashes of color from the fast section and an unexpected ending.
