The Most Wonderful Tunes of the Year

I can’t believe it’s been 3 weeks since I’ve blogged! Clearly my initial enthusiasm has waned…or else I just got super busy…a little of both, I think.

Well, here’s a quick update:

I finished the piece for the Clarke Community High School Concert Band on October 18! Hooray! Rehearsals begin tomorrow, and it will be premiered at their Winter Concert on Monday, December 17 at 7:00 pm.

Work has been keeping me really busy (and often sore, since I lift heavy boxes while standing on a concrete floor all day). I am officially terrified for Black Friday. (Pray for me!!!)

My new project is some string quartet arranging and transcribing for the Christmas production at the church I went to when I was in grad school. (It’s His House in Mount Pleasant, MI – if you live anywhere around there, you’re going to want to check it out!) I also hope to do some collaborating with my brother, Charlie, and I have plans for a new band piece based on Psalm 19. But lest you read my “Take a Nap!” post from a few weeks ago and are now thinking I’m a hypocrite, I’m trying to give myself plenty of rest, too!

So what I want to share with you today is the poem from my Christmas choir piece, God With Us (and if you think it’s too early for Christmas music, just remember that I work in retail…). Christmas is probably my favorite time of year, and I just love the idea of “God with us.” I wanted to celebrate the joy of Christmas with a modern yet medieval-inspired carol of sorts, and this was the result. You can listen to the whole thing here.

Emmanuel, God with us
God His love has shown
Emmanuel, God with us
We are not alone

Hail the Savior holy
Laid in manger lowly
God has come to earth
He our wrongs is righting
We in Him delighting
Celebrate His birth

Emmanuel, God with us
God His love has shown
Emmanuel, God with us
We are not alone

Hear the angels singing
Wise men gifts are bringing
God has come to earth
Let us join in praising
To Him our hearts raising
Celebrate His birth

Emmanuel, God with us
God His love has shown
Emmanuel, God with us
We are not alone

Melody, you will do great on black friday! I loved working it when I was in retail…very energizing! Have fun and I think you should keep singing this wonderful song over and over that day. :)
